Seven researchers at HMS have been awarded grants by the Damon Runyon Foundation to carry out innovative cancer research. They were among 18 new Damon Runyon Fellows announced by the foundation, each one receiving a three-year fellowship worth $156,000. The program encourages talented young scientists from across the country to work on breakthrough cancer studies. Three members of the HMS faculty have been named Pew Scholars in the Biomedical Sciences by the Pew Charitable Trusts, out of a total of 21 scholars announced nationwide for 2010. The scholars program provides $240,000 over four years and encourages scientists in their early years as assistant professor to pursue innovative research and take calculated risks. The recipients from HMS are Fernando Camargo, Alexander Gimelbrant and Sun Hur. Three members of the HMS Department of Neurobiology were granted Freudenberger research awards: Sandeep Datta, HMS assistant professor of neurobiology; Chenghua Gu, HMS assistant professor of neurobiology; and Bernardo Sabatini, HMS professor of neurobiology. The awards, funded by the Freudenberg family, longtime supporters of the HMS Department of Neurobiology, support research leading to the understanding, treatment and cure of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Each researcher will receive $100,000 per year for two years.

Doris Duke and Ellison Awards Won Through HMS Foundation Funds Four HMS faculty members have recently received grants through the HMS Foundation Funds program, which serves as a clearinghouse for grants that require an institution to nominate candidates, as opposed to candidates applying initially to the granting organizations.
