Institute of Medicine Names 8 From HMS

Eight faculty members from HMS are among the 65 new appointees to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Established in 1970, the institute is both an honorific membership organization and an advisory group that analyzes health issues and makes recommendations on national health policy.

When Superintendent of Boston Public Schools Carol Johnson gave a keynote address to students at Harvard Medical School in September, she urged them to tackle science on campus with gusto. None of her listeners had yet applied to HMS, however, let alone enrolled. Their average age was 17.
